Is it possible to insert line numbers in Word?

Postby Meri » Tue May 19, 2009 8:07 am

I am proofreading my daughter's essay and although I send it to her I often need to talk through something over the phone and I need to direct her to the right place.

I usually end up saying something like 'second paragraph on page 3, sentence beginning with....'

It would be so much easier if I could just say a line number like you get in the outer margin of plays.

I better mention that I actually don't use Word at home but a substitute called Star Writer but can get access to Word if necessary for the purposes of this.

Thanks

Hi Meri.

You can indeed add line numbers to Word, here's how:

Go to the file menu > select page setup > go to the layout tab > click on the line numbers... button.

In there you can find a little check box called add line numbering, click that and you'll be presented with a few options which you'll need to specify: the number to start from, the increment, how much of the document to cover etc; I guess for what you're doing the defaults are probably ok.

To remove the numbers again just uncheck the add line numbering box.

Viola!

Hope this helps.

That is absolutely brilliant! That has made my day! (Well my hour certainly)

Many thanks!
