The proofreading symbols

Introduction

The tables below show the various marks used in proofreading and copy editing. There are four tables:

Deleting, replacing and inserting;
Formatting;
Miscellaneous; and
Representations of common characters.

The column heads are: Symbol (an image of the symbol inserted in the body of the text); Description (specifically when it is used); and Side mark (an image of the symbol used in the margin).


 

Deleting, replacing and inserting

Symbol Description Side mark
Delete single character, but do not close up characters or words around it
Delete character and then close up to leave no gap
Delete more than one character or whole word or words
