The psychology of proofreading

There are as many theories about how to proofread as there are proofreaders. The psychology of proofreading is not the kind of subject that would interest your average person, but there is something remarkable in the ability to spot errors when a perfectly normal-looking arrangement of letters presents itself right in front of you. Imagine you're on a football team, and you become aware that one of the players wearing the same red strip as you are is in fact rooting for the other team (if it helps, you suspect he's engaged in a complex betting sting).
