Glossary

alphabet length The length of the LOWER-CASE alphabet, that is, abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz, in a given FONT. Useful for estimating EXTENT.
Americanisation The use of words, phrases and spellings that are the standard in the USA, for example color instead of colour, fetus instead of foetus, realize instead of realise, trunk/hood instead of boot/bonnet, center instead of centre, and putting all punctuation inside quotation marks.
apostrophe A symbol ( ) used to denote possession (the books cover; Tonys friends) or contraction (isnt; shell). Sometimes used in plurals of letters or numbers.
arabic numerals 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. (Note the lower case "a" in "arabic".)
arabic pagination Standard PAGINATION after the PRELIMS, using ARABIC NUMERALS.
